Artist Statement

“Authenticity is a collection of choices we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” Authenticity is a word I strive to live by. Being as true to myself as possible has been one of my most important tasks since I decided I wanted to pursue a career as a professional in the dance field and earn a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance. Dancing is something I’ve done my whole life without speculation but as I entered higher education I found that dancing is about more than just movement, releasing stress, and self-expression. The way dance intertwines with other mediums of art and society forces me to question things and thus I am discovering new facets of myself everyday.

I firmly believe that people’s stories matter. The idea that someone can be an influence in a stranger’s life just because they decided to speak their personal truths is inspirational. I want to share my stories; my thoughts, my opinions, my questions, my dreams; all through my art. I consider all roles in this hierarchy of life to be important; those that have power or a strong following are just as important as the people whose voices are only heard by a few. My goal right now isn’t necessarily to be heard by the masses, it is to first hear myself and translate that into something that makes a statement about me. In turn, I want my journey of the self to inspire people just as others inspire me everyday.

Over the past three years I have dedicated myself to art like never before. I’ve learned dancing in a studio in addition to dance history, dance analysis, dance writing, dance production, composition, sound design, as well as falling in love with dance filmmaking and videography just to name a few things. I declared a minor in Video Arts and was introduced to another world that I could play and find bits and pieces of myself in. When it comes down to it, developing a proficiency in all these areas has helped me realize that I enjoy making art because there is always a new way to uncover a new thing about myself and at this point in my life “I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best, I am the subject I want to know better” as stated by artist Frida Kahlo.

I’ve always wanted to be synonymous with authenticity but it’s a lot harder to be yourself when you’re always worried about the opinions of the person next to you. I’ve had so many doors opened for me and I can finally allow myself to open my mind to endless possibilities. Now I can never get tired of exploring myself, my ideas, my thoughts, and my opinions for my own sake and that has not only helped me in my dancing, but also in my critical thinking, and willingness to be open. I make art because everything I make is a reflection of myself and I am discovering what it means to be Gabriella.
