Warning: This is a rather lengthy post but it is so, so worth it. It’s been about a two months since we returned to Columbus from Salvador, Bahia. In that time I’ve completed my third year of undergrad and jumpstarted my senior project… my senior project. Already. We stepped foot onto campus at a time that shows no mercy—the end of the semester—and with that said, I hadn’t been able to write about the most momentous experience of my life thus […]
(Gotta love the pun in the title, amiright?) This school year I have had the pleasure of working with Christine Ghinder again for her senior thesis project. I cannot truly describe the evolution of the piece since we began in August/September but it has been a crazy, fun roller coaster ride! “Prism” was a work that aimed to address the intersectionality between dance, music and visual art (painting in this case). What started as a very abstract project became something to […]
When classes started in August, Susan Hadley asked the class what we wanted to get out of composition this semester. There was a long list of things ranging from being comfortable creating and presenting our work, to learning how to structure dances. One of the big things everyone agreed on was learning how to create and coach dancers on the spot, so that became one of our in-class assignments.
We slaved away in a studio for hours upon hours, indulging ourselves in a single piece, pounding our blood, sweat, and tears into the floor. We stressed over counts and formations. We danced through injuries and cast changes. We pushed through the yelling but we also laughed ourselves to tears. We joked and smiled through it all… most of it anyway. We did all of this for a mere 7 minutes on stage. A semester of hard work, done in […]
A semester and a half into freshman year and I have already be introduced to so many great things! From running this blog and photoshop to dance films and documentaries, things have really been layering up outside of the studio.
Remember the video I posted a few months ago about the freshmen dance majors performing for a CNN segment? That amazing video was recorded and edited by the amazing Elijah Palnik. Video editing isn’t his only talent either. Elijah is one of the many great musicians for the dance department. I think it’s safe to say that Elijah worked with my class quite a bit last semester from playing for our contemporary class to teaching us a few secrets about […]
I really love being a dance major at THE Ohio State University. A few weeks ago, by some weird twist of fate, the freshmen dance majors had the amazing opportunity of performing and being recorded for a CNN segment called Rivalry Express. I honestly don’t know anything about the actual segment OR if we really made it on television… but the experience was awesome!
